Four-wheel drive is more than a way to climb up a snowy driveway or escape a plowed-in parking space. Pushed hard, a good 4x4 can take a competent driver to places the pavement bound masses can hardly imagine- up mountains, across streams, over boulders, through snow, mud and sand. Four-wheeling brings the freedom to leave daily toils behind and venture into the rugged wilderness. All it takes is knowledge, planning and the proper equipment.
In nearly 30 years in the sport, including work as an off-road instructor for Land Rover, Jim Allen has seen it all- and from some pretty hairy angles. In the 4-Wheeler's Bible, this veteran wheeler and writer provides a thorough, insightful look at the vehicles, accessories, tricks and techniques you'll need to get you there and back safely. Numerous color photos, illustrations and sidebars show you what works, how it works, what to do, and what to avoid. At the back of the book is a glossary that defines the lingo of the four-wheeling world, and a list of suppliers who can help you build any rig you can imagine.
Whether you've scratched and clawed your way with the best f them, or just imagined it from a comfy chair, the 4-Wheeler's Bible will help you down the trail. Virtually anyone can enjoy the thrill and challenge of four-wheeling, at the wheel, as a spotter, or just along for the ride. Before you load up, read up and be prepared, no matter where the trail leads.

Very nice.:
I was impressed by the detailed info in this book and how many areas the author was able to cover. I bought this book while looking for an offroad vehicle to purchase. It really helped me to prioritize and understand all the products a seller might have put in their truck. Well written, great pictures and an overall very cool book.
great book:
Great book for a starter. It has good need to know info which will keep you from feeling silly while standing around "talking" Jeep with other gear heads. For more seasoned wheelers this may not be the book for you but still a good read as it covers safety, recovers, how to drive on all kinds of terrain and angles.
Excellent reference for anyone who drives offroad.:
Disclaimer: I've met Jim Allen and had some email correspondence with him over the years. He was also the instructor for a good friends Land-Rover School trip in Colorado (approx.) 10 years ago. I'm an experienced off road driver (4-wheeler?). I bought the book because I knew that with Jim being the author, it would be useful and entertaining and I wanted to read what he had to say. I wasn't wrong. Coinciding with the arrival of this book was the (unexpected) purchase of a new rig--a modern Land Rover... more info
