An excellent tool for understanding chinese medicine:

An acupuncturist recommended this book to me as a way to get a better handle on Chinese medicine. I am not a professional, but found this book fairly easy to understand as well as extremely engaging. I devoured it in a single weekend. There are some technical segments to this book, but it also contains a great overview of what Chinese medicine is about.

This is the best chinese medicine book for laypeople...:

that I know of but as always please let me know if you know something better.
The best spirit of chinese medicine will all help us break free from the bad habits we picked up in western medicine (too numberous to enumerate here)
and return to the truer roots of a truly healthy and spiritual life.
Ephraim Jeffrey Geltman

part of the basic reading:

I think this book is a good starter when you want to know more about Chinese medicine. I like all the history part, and the way the meridians are presented. I found the cases interesting and to the point. It is true that you have to be persistent to finish this book, because sometimes it lacks nerve. But, not every book can or should feel like a Dan Brown or John Grisham, if you know what I mean.
And, some of the info was so dense, that I did feel the need to go back and review certain chapters... more info

Understand Acupuncture in easy language:

This classic helps lay readers understand the basic TCM concepts in easy terms. A must for all acupuncture students.
I have been practicing for 15 years and still use it as a reference!
The meridians are layed out and discussed clearly.
Even the pulse and tongue diagnosis section allows patients to better understand holistic thought. Thorough and complete.
